The Arctic experiences warming rates nearly four times as fast as the global average creating acute risks for local communities with food security and health concerns caused by permafrost thaw and ecosystem changes. Warming also makes possible new economic opportunities, such as extended trade routes, tourism, or easier exploitation of natural resources by the retreat of sea ice with potential consequences beyond the Arctic region. In this session, we explore the different cascading impacts of climate change in the Arctic that cross borders, and the dynamics and coherence of the policy responses linked to them by identifying their interactions, synergies, trade-offs and potential conflicts.

Speakers:

  • Claire Mosoni, Finnish Environment Institute
